Diaphragm: the right material for your application
The diaphragm is the central functional element of a diaphragm valve and must be adapted to your process conditions. When it comes to choosing the right diaphragm, key factors to consider include the medium used and the temperature range.
Two material variants are available:
EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene rubber) is suitable for many hygienic applications such as water or steam.
PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) offers high chemical resistance and can be used for more demanding or aggressive media.

A diaphragm valve is a shut-off or control valve in which a flexible diaphragm separates the medium from the actuator. Overview of how a diaphragm valve works:
The medium flows through the valve body. An elastic diaphragm separates the medium flow from the actuator.
When the valve opens, the diaphragm lifts and allows the flow to pass.
When the valve closes, the diaphragm is pressed onto a weir in the valve body, thereby stopping the medium flow.
In hygienically sensitive processes, diaphragm valves are considered the state of the art, as they completely separate the medium from the atmosphere and allow for good cleanability. In less critical applications or in secondary and supply lines, however, other valve variants such as ball valve shut-off valves, globe valves or angle seat valves can also be used. Special control valves are also available for more precise flow control.
The service life of a diaphragm depends greatly on the specific usage conditions. With proper design and adherence to the operating parameters, it can be significantly improved. The main influencing factors are:
Pressure & temperature: Operating within the specified limits prevents premature material fatigue.
Switching frequency: Frequent load changes increase the cyclic load on the diaphragm.
Medium: pH value, chemicals and particle load must match the chemical resistance of the diaphragm material.
Flow velocity: Excessively high values cause abrasion, while values that are too low promote fouling.

The choice of diaphragm material depends on the medium used and the temperature requirements of your application. The base materials available are EPDM and PTFE.
EPDM is suitable for many hygienic applications with water or steam.
If more chemically demanding or aggressive media are used, PTFE is generally required.
